Starting Scenes Stronger

Want the chance to show off your new skills? Students who attend all four festival workshops will have their own special showcase on Sunday, March 31 at 5pm!

Starting out a scene strong helps the players align all their forces and work in the same direction and, most importantly, having set up a firm foundation, it gives them the space and liberty to play and have fun...and that’s what it’s really all about, isn’t it? In this class, veteran improviser Paul Vaillancourt is going to share a collection of his favorite and most effective time tested techniques for getting scenes off to the strongest starts possible. Ever had a hard time getting a scene going or struggled to start a scene and then had struggle the whole way through? Have you hesitated to initiate scenes because you have that “not sure” feeling? Do you just want to focus on those initial moments of the scene and make your approach stronger? If you said "yes" to any of those questions, then this workshop is for you!

Paul Vaillancourt has been teaching and performing improv for over 30 years. In that time he has appeared all over the country including such notable venues as HBO’s Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Chicago’s iO (where he studied with the immortal Del Close), New York’s UCB Theater, and the iO West in Los Angeles (which he founded). Paul has also had success as an actor, writer, and producer creating and working on shows for a plethora of networks and outlets. He is the creator and host of “Improv Tips” on YouTube and the author of “The Triangle of the Scene: A simple, practical, powerful method for approaching improvisation” and the FREE book “5 Things Improvisers Can Do To Stay Creative, Feel Inspired and Have Fun!” He currently lives in LA with his wife, kids, and dogs, and he’s always up to talk about improv or action movies.
